Strong electrostatic fields are excited and amplified due to the modulation of an intense laser pulse induced by an ionizing plasma. This amplification of plasma waves always occurs, more or less, for laser propagation in ionizing plasmas. It might be harmful for the realization of an x-ray laser utilizing optical field ionization because the residual energy of the plasma by the plasma wave becomes serious even if stimulated Raman backward scattering and other heating mechanisms are avoided.
