TGV Méditerranée - Seismic hazard and soil liquefaction potential.Consequences on embankments design

This paper presents a methodology to assess regional and local seismic hazards appliedto a new high speed railway project named TGV Méditerranée. Regional seismic hazard and ageotechnical pre-zonation have been carried out along more than 250 kilometres of the project. Localseismic hazard and soil liquefaction hazard have been assessed along the alluvial valleys of theRh?ne, the Durance and the Gardon, along about one hundred kilometres of this project. This specificpart of the study is quite unique in a French civil engineering project. For potentially liquefiablesoils, remedial techniques are proposed to ensure the stability of railway embankments.
