A new oxygen blowing system called the POSB (POSCO Blowing) system has been developed to cope with demands for improvement of RH degasser in Kwangyang Works, POSCO since March 1996. It has been applied in the 250ton RH vacuum degasser and it allowed to produce ultra-low carbon steel under 20ppm in carbon after 17 min decarburisation at a rate of 0.20 min~(-1). The temperature drop-rate during decarburisation of ultra-low carbon steel was decreased to -0.75 °C /min. Meanwhile, the heating rate by the addition of aluminum and oxygen was increased to 4.5 °C/min. The POSB system has been proved to be very effective to enhance decarburisation reaction and to increase productivity in ultra-low carbon steel production.
