This paper describes a series of centrifuge tests performed to study bending moments and subgrade reaction acting on sheet pile walls. A water circulater that could be mounted on a soil container was developed to maintain water tables in bothupstream and downstream sides of the sheet pile. Two types of sheet piles equipped with ten pairs of strain gauges each were prepared, and bending moments in the sheet piles induced due to net water pressure were measured. Back analysis according to thetheory of beams on elastic beds was conducted to obtain the subgrade reaction. In the back analysis, a model ground having a coefficient of subgrade reaction proportional to depth was assumed. The best fit values of the coefficient of the rate of increase of subgrade reaction along depth k1 were determined. The results of the back analysis showed that the rate k1 depended on the ratio of differential head relative to penetration depth of the sheet pile AH/D. The expression representing the rate k1 will besuggested in this paper.
