New Generation With Old Power Plants: Have You Lost Your Megawatts?

In today's capital averse power business, dersiness, deratings, lost capability, lost efficiency, and lost availability all represent opportunities for capacity regain. These opportunities can offset new generation, be made available for increased sales, or favorably capture peak usage needs. Some owners of electric generation facilities are already considering ways to optimize these existing, older power plants by upgrading or repowering these facilities. This paper discusses the 'upgrading' of older plants to gain capacity. Some key areas of upgrades for capacity increases involve minimal capital investment and are new found opportunities as power plant systems reach maturity. This is ever so important as power plant operation strategies and power costs are realigned.
