An Improved Shear Deformation Theory for Laminated Composite Structures

In the present paper, a new laminated plate theory called MRZZ3 is developed that retains some of the improved predictive capabilities of higher-order zig-zag laminated plate theories yet is computationally equivalent to first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) both in term of its primary degrees of freedom and its finite element formulation. In particular, the present theory is capable of accurately predicting transverse shear interlaminar stresses and does not require an ad hoc shear correction factor. The theory is based on Reissner's mixed variational principle, but is cast in a form that is identical to FSDT.
