As a response to the increasing demand for an optical lens for use in high quality mass products such as a camera, wireless telephone etc., a highly efficient ultra-smooth manufacturing technique for cemented carbide dies has recently been desired strongly. In the authors' previous research, the ultra-smoothness vertical grinding method, based on the new concept, was developed. In order to apply it to the efficient ultra-smoothness grinding method of the cemented carbide dies, the ultra-smoothness grinding characteristics of cemented carbide, using the newly manufactured vertical grinder is basically investigated. The surface roughness below 40nm(R_z) in a three dimensional measurement of 256(im square is found to be formed on the ground surface of cemented carbide with high productivity.
