In this paper, we report on the recent development of the multi-function tribological probe microscope (TPM) with a new feature added, that is, the thermal property measurement With this, the new TPM will be capable of mapping surface properties of topography, friction, elastic modulus, hardness and thermal conductivity or diffusivity. These properties are related to human's touch-feel perception in terms of smooth-rough, grippy-slippery, hard-soft and warm-cold. The new TPM has a large scanning range of 20×20×5 mm~3 in X-Y-Z directions, compatible with the size of a human fingertip. The design of mechanical and electronic systems and some of preliminary results are reported here.
