The evolution of thermal stresses of castings is the results of its nonuniform cooling process. While, the thermal stress and deformation result in the change of the casting and mold interface condition, somewhere gap occurs, somewhere pressurized contact occurs, which will alter the heat transfer between casting and mold. In this paper the contact element method is used to study the interaction of sand mold and the casting. Meanwhile, the contact status is fed back for the heat transfer between sand mold and casting by re-evaluation of the heat transfer coefficient based on the gap or pressure between them. Therefore, the thermal and mechanical phenomena are coupled in two directions. The method is applied into a stress frame specimen casting and a cylinder block, finally. The results are compared with those without consideration of contact element method and are proved to be more precise.
