The use by companies of CAD analysis for design substantiation in new product development (NPD) (with particular emphasis to mass and batch produced products)

This paper discusses the use of CAD for design analysis to substantiate the design of new products during the NPD process. Based on our experience with a wide range of companies, as well as a survey about the use of CAD in companies in Singapore, it is concluded that the designers of mass or batch produced products tend to under-utilize CAD for design analysis. This is in contrast to the designers of capital plant who tend to utilize it to its full potential. Reasons for this under-utilization are suggested. Some of the useful actions that can be taken by companies, academia and other institutions to encourage a better utilisation are also outlined.
