The most serious problem for patients suffered from ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), paralysis or tracheotomy, is the lack of communication with others. As they cannot talk, important signs are missed or ignored. In this study we consider patient's eye blinking (since most patients can move their eyelids) and have developed a communication system. There are some similar systems available, but almost all these systems require some sensors attached onto the patients, and hence these systems are not suitable for long-term monitoring. In our new system, patients' blinkings are detected thorough the visual sensing system which can execute real-time subtraction of images upon motion picture from a CCD camera.
