There are already a number of intelligent system applications to distribution systems. In the new environment, customer satisfaction is an important indicator of competitiveness. Power quality assessment involves the detection of transients, sags and harmonics. It also involves reasoning about the cause-effects between disturbances and power quality problems. In this paper, the author describes how knowledge-based systems, qualitative reasoning, artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic will find interesting applications in the power quality area.
