The authors propose a new functional electrical stimulation (FES) system dedicated to selective electro-stimulation of the sacral roots. This system generates a stimulus composed of two biphasic current waveforms, of independant parameters, that are transmitted to the nerve via a single bipolar electrode. High frequency blockage has been used in acute studies in dogs to inhibit the somatic innervation of the sphincter while leaving the bladder muscle free to be stimulated by a lower frequency.
