The performance of an integrated voice/data cellular radio system that uses circuit- and packet-switching techniques to transmit packetized voice and data, respectively, is evaluated. Two voice call handling schemes, which use "guard channels" to prioritize handoff calls but differentiated by the deployment of a queue for handoff calls, as well as the nonprioritized scheme are presented. Data transmission using diversity reservation Aloha, which includes delayed and cleared schemes, is proposed. System performance characterized by the blocking probability, the handoff failure probability, and the forced termination probability associated with a voice call, as well as the activity factor versus throughput characteristic for a data packet are enumerated via approximate mathematical analyses and computer simulations.
