Surface and lateral waves play a significant role in HF radio wave propagation for a long distance in the ionosphere

The authors consider that there are three kinds of waves, surface, interlayer and lateral, which could exist in the ionosphere. They describe the mathematical treatment of each of these, discussing boundary problems, and evaluate them as waves for long-range propagation in the ionosphere.
