Since spring 2014, four commercial off-the-shelf camerasrn(COTS) are attached to ESA’s Columbus laboratoryrntaking videos of the Earth 24/7. The only Europeanrnpartner of the NASA experiment ‘High Definition EarthrnViewing’ (HDEV) is the educational project ‘ColumbusrnEye – Live-Imagery from the ISS in Schools'. In order to implementrnearth observation techniques for a sustainable use inrnsecondary school lessons, the project develops interactivernteaching materials. They enable pupils to applyrnprofessional remote sensing analyses. The paper explainsrnthe development paradigm of the project rootedrnin problem-based learning and moderate constructivism.rnIt will be discussed how teachers are provided with didacticalrncommentaries and trained in face-to-face workshopsrnfor an efficient and sustainable implementation ofrnthe material. In doing so, it is ensured that pupils canrnexperience the value of earth observation and spacerntechnologies to monitor ongoing processes of coupledrnhuman-environment systems driving the future of thernEarth.
