In this paper, we address the problem of tolerating the adverse effects of intermittent faults on the operation of asynchronous sequential machines. When an intermittent fault occurs, the asynchronous machine falls into the failure mode and after finite steps returns to the normal mode. The main objective is to control the machine so that the closed-loop system can maintain the normal input/output behavior when the machine is in the failure mode. We show that fault diagnosis and tolerance of the machine depends on the latent reachability of the machine in the failure mode. The existence conditions for fault diagnosis and tolerance by an appropriate corrective controller are presented, and an illustrative example is provided for demonstrating the proposed control scheme.
