This paper discusses single-ply laser cutting of automotive air-bag material versus multiply laser cutting. To begin with, the principles of a fabric laser cutting system are described. Next, existing laser cutting technologies utilized by air-bag manufacturers are discussed along with the problems associated with these technologies. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of multi-ply laser cutting are outlined and the solutions to these disadvantages by using a single-ply laser cutting method are detailed. Finally, the paper describes the features and applications of the single-ply laser cutting system that not only improve quality but also increase productivity, flexibility, and lower cost.
