Abstract: We describe the development and application of aknowledge-based expert system for the space shuttlemain propulsion propellant loading. This tool, thepropulsion advisory tool (PAT), performs systemdiagnostics and engineering assessments for spaceshuttle main propulsion system engineers. The PATidentifies both actual and potential system failuresand provides pertinent data for anomaly resolution.Over 150 measurements are monitored in real time at thefull sample rate in order to evaluate systemperformance. Rules for the system are coded in plainEnglish and are based on existing requirementsdocuments and knowledge captured from propellantloading experts. In this way, the expert system workswithin a framework similar to the way humans would; asystem based on human logic and reasoning. The PATknowledge base interfaces with a user display on thesame platform for advanced system schematics, datarepresentation, and data management. The RockwellInternational knowledge base diagnostic system and theLockheed Space Operations Company user display areplanned to run on an integrated workstation. !0
