The Laboratory of Nuclear Science (LNS) at Tohoku University was founded as an university-based laboratory in 1966, for research of the nuclear science and the education of graduate students. It has two basic accelerators: a 300-MeV electron linear accelerator (LINAC) which has been working since 1967 and a 1.2-GeV stretcher-booster ring (STB ring). The schematic view of accelerators and the experimental stations at LNS is shown in Figure 1. The LINAC produces a high intensity pulsed beam which is used in a wide range of research fields including nuclear physics, solid state physics, radio-chemistry, biology, material science and so on at experimental stations ③ and ⑥. The construction of the STB ring was completed in 1997. The STB ring has three functions: the pulse-beam stretcher, the booster and the storage ring. In the stretcher mode operation, the ring accepts the pulse beam from the LINAC and produces a quasi continuous beam. The extracted beam with a maximum energy of 200 MeV is transported to target stations for the (e,e'X) experiments at ④ and the photoreaction experiments with tagged photon beam at ⑤. In the booster and the storage mode operation, electrons with their energies of 200 MeV are injected into the STB from the LINAC and are accelerated up to 1.2 GeV in about 1 second to be stored in the STB. They can be used for the internal bremsstrahlung photon production.
