Developing roadside telecommunications services forRegional Control Centres

The Highways Agency (HA) is an executive agency of the Department for Transportrnand is responsible for the trunk roads and motorways in England, its roadsiderntelecommunications services are currently provided through a disparate collection ofrnlargely unconnected networks, which have limited capability to meet future demands.rnTo address future ITS requirements the HA is adopting a new approach to the deliveryrnof roadside telecommunications services. This approach uses the Internet Protocolrn(IP), which will provide a highly flexible and scalable solution as well as providingrn'anywhere to anywhere' connectivity across a national road network. The approachrnbeing adopted aims to provide the IP services and associated ITS applications usingrnopen standards and 'Commercial Off The Shelf' solutions whilst ensuring thatrnchallenging issues such as network security and the requirements to support real timernand safety related ITS applications are met.
