The hydromechanical behavior of isolated rock joints is presently an important research topic because of its importance in understanding the behavior of jointed rock masses. An analytical mechanical model has been developed to study the shear behavior of rock joints under constant normal stress. The first step in the simulation is to specify the normal load so that the contact points between the two rough surfaces at the beginning of the shear process can be calculated. The model includes mechanical interaction between contact points, which is important in determining the distribution of stress across the joint. The model was used to study the influence of material properties (Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio) on the results of shear simulations during the elastic phase under constant normal load. The tangential stiffness obtained is very dependant on these parameters (particularly on Young's modulus), but also depends on the initial contact area and the geometrical distribution of the contact points.
