Performance Characteristics of Tandem Heat Pump System using Deep Ocean Water

This study experimented on a heating and cooling system that uses thedeep ocean water as a heat source in a laboratory equipped with thewater intake system. Experiments on direct cooling using the deepocean water of yearlong temperatures at 5℃ or less were performed.Experiments on heating using a heat pump system were performed withvarious ocean waters as heat sources including the deep ocean water at5℃, the surface ocean water at 10oC, and the ground ocean water at13℃, among others. The comparison results between the conventionalcooling systems and the direct cooling system using the deep oceanwater revealed that the latter saved approximately 82.7% of the totalpower consumption and reduced the carbon dioxide exhaust by about75.6 kgCO_2. The heating COPs of the surface ocean water and theground ocean water increased by approximately 21.2% and 28.4%more, respectively, than that of the deep ocean water.
