Degradability of Five Aromatic Compounds in a Pilot Wastewater Treatment System

The purified terephthalic acid (PTA)-manufacturing wastewater was treated aerobically by functional strain Fhhh in the carrier activated sludge process (CASP) at a pilot plant. Biodegradability of p-toluic (p-Tol), benzoic acid (BA), 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (4-CBA), phthalic acid (PA) and terephthalic acid (TA) was monitored in the wastewater treatment system. Results showed that the sludge loading rate of TOC (SLRT) and COD(SLRC) were 0.53g TOC g SS~(-1) d~(-1) and 1.79 g COD g SS~(-1) d~(-1) respectively. There were significant positive correlation (P < 0.05 or 0.01= between the manganese peroxidase specific activities (MnP-Sas) and the sludge loading rates of aromatics (SLRAs) except for PA. Our data suggest that the biodegradation of the five aromatic compounds in the wastewater by Fhhh followed the sequence: BA > PA > 4-CBA > TA > p-Tol. The perspective of using MnP-SA to predict the removal rate for the five aromatics was discussed in this paper.
