Compound ion salt, a novel salt substitute: from animal study to community-based population trial

Background: There is a growing body of evidence shown that reducing the daily intake of salt could be a useful life-style modification strategy for hypertensive patients in addition to pharmacological therapy. However, it is difficult to changing the long-established, engrained tasting habits. Therefore, the attempt to develop a new salt substitute with low sodium chloride component is a big challenge in the real world.Objective: To develop a new salt substitute with low sodium chloride component, testing its safety and efficacy in animal and in a community-based population. Methods: The novel salt substitute, named compound ion salt, was co-developed by Pingjin hospital and Tianjin Kaifu S&T Development Corp.LTD., with lower content of sodium chloride (65%), and other additives (30% potassium chloride, 0.8% calcium, folic acid). In the animal study, 80 seven weeks-old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were randomized to receive 8% high salt, 1% compound-ion salt and 1% normal salt in food. During the period, non-invasive systolic blood pressure, body weight, urine volume, urinary sodium excretion and urinary protein excretion were measured every three weeks.
