Refractories for RH Degassers -Materials, Equipment and Maintenance Practices that Have Increased Snorkel Life for Speciality and Basic Steel Grades

There are over 30 operating RH degassers in China, and the number is growing rapidly. The operating conditions of RH degassers present many challenges for the refractories used to construct these units. Erosion and corrosion by flowing steel and slag are significant factors. In addition, operating temperatures are relatively high, and residence times long. As a result, the refractory life of RH degassers is comparatively short and unpredictable which creates an availability problem. Due to all of the above factors, costs are also high. Current refractory maintenance products and practices are not capable of further extending RH degasser refractory life in a cost effective manner. New maintenance systems are required to improve degasser availability and decrease costs.
