@@Introduction Development of high performance hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) as alternatives of perfluoriniated PEMs such as Nation? and Flemion? is strongly required today for the realization of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). We previously prepared highly sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) with binaphthyl units BNSH-100(OX) by the oxidative polymerization, followed by post-sulfonation.1 The BNSH-100(OX) membrane with ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 3.19 mequiv/g demonstrated excellent proton conductivity in a wide range of relative humidity and high water resistance derived from the highly hydrophobic binaphthyl units simultaneously.
