OPENING STATEMENTS

On behalf of the Directors General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency I have great pleasure in welcoming you to this FAO/IAEA Symposium on the Use of Nuclear and Related Techniques for Studying the Environmental Behaviour of Crop Protection Chemicals. The two sponsoring organizations have a well established commitment to assisting Member States to combat and prevent environmental pollution of all types. They have both taken leading roles in the support of activities to implement the recommendations of Agenda 21 of the Report of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. For example, within the IAEA, promotion of the safe development of nuclear energy makes an obvious contribution to the reduction of CO_2, SO_2 and NO_x emissions. In fact, throughout the world 437 nuclear power plants are in operation, generating 17% of the total electricity consumption. Technical and regulatory programmes dealing with radioactive waste management also clearly have environmental protection as an important objective.
