The locally restricted application of a differential Reynolds-stress turbulence model (DSM) within the multidomain 3D-prediction code AIOLOS is presented. A coherent physical space is divided into two computational subgrids. Each grid is treated as an independent subspace with individual numerical, physical and geometrical problem descriptions. The DSM in conjunction with a higher-order differencing scheme is applied on the fine grid only, while the coarse grid solution is obtained with the standard k-e model and the upwind scheme. Results of the numerical simulation of a coal-fired utility boiler with swirl burners are presented. Comparisons between measurements and predictions are promising. It is shown that the domain decomposition method is a suitable instrument for the locally restricted application of advanced physical models even on problems of industrial scale.
