Mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are used worldwide by terrorists against Soldiers and Civilians. In support of the Global War on Terrorism, the Warhead Group at U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) is investigating the use of Multiple Explosively Formed Penetrator (MEFP) warhead technologies to neutralize mines and IED threats. MEFP warheads were originally developed for light armor target defeat. This study will develop an understanding and database of the MEFP parameters (i.e. material, mass, velocity, shape) required to cause detonation, deflagration or mechanical breakup of the mine and IED threats with and without overburden. A matrix of MEFP parameters was formulated and then initial simulations and subscale testing was completed to screen the MEFP characteristics required to defeat different categories of mine and IEDs. Parameters from the subscale warhead tests and numerical simulations were be used to design and test prototype and full size warheads.
