LEACHING OF NUTRIENTS AND HEAVY METALS FROM DRAINED PEATLANDS AFTER WOOD ASH FERTILISATION

The objective of the study was to determine the leaching of nutrients and heavy metals from drained peatland catchments over a 5-year period following wood ash application. The leaching of S compounds accompanied by Ca, K and Mg increased but not that of P or N compounds. The leaching of heavy metals was very low and was not affected by ash treatment. Nutrients leaching were greater from site dominated by Sphagnum peat compared to site dominated by Carex peat. Over the 5-year period between 9 and 50 % of the amount of S in the added ash and between 5 and 23 % of the K, depending on site, were exported via drainage water.
