In the EUROPEAT project, a dynamic process oriented model will be developed to simulate the decomposition of peat and its effects on subsidence, disappearance of peat soil, eutrophication of ground and surface waters and emission of greenhouse gasses, in relation to drainage and climatic conditions. The model will be calibrated and validated against data from long-term field experiments and field and lysimeter experiments carried out by the six countries participating in the project. The validated model will be used to quantifying actual GHG emissions, nutrient leachate fluxes, peat erosion and subsidence rates at a regional scale. In scenario studies the effects of changes in land use, water management and global climate on these quantities will be studied.
