For many decades the diesel engine has been the principal power unit for commercial vehicles and buses. While reliability, greater cost-effectiveness and a reduced fuel consumption were the major development objectives in the past, the emphasis in recent times has also been on achieving a reduction in exhaust emission. In recent years numerous vehicles produced by the DaimlerChrysler group have therefore been equipped with modified drive systems, and the figure below shows a selection of these. It transpired that particularly for vehicles with a local or at most regional operating profile, there is a definite if small demand. Accordingly, versions of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) power units have been developed for the distribution sector. Mercedes-Benz Econic trucks have likewise been equipped with CNG drive to improve exhaust emissions in waste disposal operations, and in the bus sector the Mercedes-Benz Citaro has been equipped with a specially developed CNG engine to meet the particularly demanding operating requirements of local passenger transport.
