Analysis and interpretation of the tectonic form were conducted based on the Noaa Avhrr image map of China and the Landsat-TM image map of China and a sketch map showing tectonic features of the study area was complied. This map clearly shows the relation between the ENE-trending Altun sinistral shear fracture on the north edge of the Qinghai-Tibet landmass and the WNW-trending wavy thrust nappe structure of the Qilian-Liupanshan foreland and shows the step-like dextral shear fault sets, which constitute an arc-insertion of the Qinghai-Tibet landmass between the Tarim and North China rigid landmasses. It also shows a "contracted neck" of the rigid landmass, which indicates strong latitudinal extension.
