Starch gel electrophoresis was used to investigate the isozyme polymorphisms in the cultured populations of five flatfish species. The results showed that the percentage of polymorphic loci ranged from 29.4% (P. olivaceus) to 0.0% (S. maximus); the observed heterozygosity (H_0) ranged from 0.086±0.038 (P. olivaceus) to 0.000±0.000 (S. maximus); the expected heterozygosity (He) ranged from 0.090±0.038 (P. olivaceus) to 0.000±0.000 (S. maximus). When compared to previous studies of wild populations, significant reductions in genetic diversities were observed in the cultured populations of S. maximus and P. lethostigma. In contrast, our studies showed no obvious reduction in genetic diversity in cultured population of K. bicoloratus. In P. olivaceus, however, noticeable loss of rare alleles was observed in the cultured population, although no significant difference in overall heterozygosities between cultured and wild populations could be detected.
