UPGRADING OF EXISTING TRANSMISSION LINES AN ATTRACTIVE ALTERNATIVE FOR RIGHT OF WAY CONSERVATION, SPEEDY IMPLEMENTATION OF PROJECTS AND OPTIMUM DEPLOYMENT OF RESOURCES

The Indian Power Sector has an ambitious plan to add about 100,000 MW generating capacity and matching transmission network of various voltage levels of the order of 60,000 kms by 2011-12 i.e. in the next 10 to 12 years. The targets to be achieved within the next 10 years time is almost equivalent to the total development, Indian Power System has witnessed in the last 5 decades. The magnitude of projects to be implemented indicates the need of efficiency and speed required for the implementation agencies to achieve the targets. The Power sector in both generation & transmission functions is highly capital intensive. In the present day scenario where power utilities are experiencing financing crunch and finding it difficult to mobilize additional funds, optimum utilization of investment assumes greater significance. Further, construction of new transmission lines is becoming difficult due to increasing right of way constraints. POWERGRID is aware of the future challenges and constraints and have been looking for new strategies, methodologies and idea and have also taken initiatives for identification / adoption of new technologies for enhancement of transmission capability of existing transmission lines like up rating / upgrading of existing transmission lines which addresses the issues of Flight Of Way conservation, optimized deployment of resources, faster implementation of projects etc.
