Mobility management is a challenging problem in a wireless Personal Communication Services (PCS) network. The location management is one mobility management research subjects. The location management (call setup protocol) defines the steps taken during call setups, such as retrieving the user location information, notifying the user of incoming calls, and setting up the circuit connection through the wired and wireless network paths. Here, wireless PCS network call setup protocols will be considered. We propose a new location management technique using distributed agent for wireless PCS networks. Agent technology gives us the tools with which to build applications that we were previously unable to build. But it can also provide a better means of conceptualizing and/or implementing a given application. One of the important domain characteristics that are often cited as a rationale for adopting agent technology is that data, control, expertise, or resources 'are inherently distributed. The motivations of the agent idea are: first, this characteristic fits PCS network infrastructure (IS-41 [1,10], GSM [10, 11]) and second, there is predictable human regular movement in a typical daily behavioral cycle. Agent idea significantly reduces the number of network messages and network hops during call setup. This idea can be adapted to any existing location management techniques. Our simulation results show improved performance when the agent-based idea is included in existing call setup protocols.
