Every project has its own characteristics; therefore within these characteristics it has to be ascertained what is the optimal methodology to execute such a project. These characteristics can be roughly categorised in the following groups: 1. Soil 2. Depths 3. Dredge area 4. Disposal area 5. Environment. Any one, or a combination of some, of the above characteristics will reduce the possible methodologies to in most cases to just 1 or 2. General dredging methods are characterised by the main equipment utilised and can be divided in 'stationary dredgers' and 'non-stationary dredgers'. For the non-stationary dredgers you have to think of the Trailer Suction Hopper Dredge and for the Stationary dredger, The Cutter suction dredgers and the Mechanical dredgers. Some of the reasons which in general lean towards use of mechanical dredgers are as follows: 1. 'Debris' in the dredge area (wires, tyres, building debris etc. etc) 2. Confined working areas (quay-walls, shallow surrounding seabed, jetties and corners) 3. Shallow working area 4. If we require to load barges 5. In case of polluted soils or other environmental constraints.
