A new rate adaptation protocol EARF (Enhanced ARF) is proposed for IEEE 802.11 based on ACK frame statistical information. The main idea is to assign each transmission rate a unique success threshold, which is controlled by a delay factor to quantify the responsiveness of a link adaptation, and dynamically updated along with channel condition. The proposed protocol needs no modification to the current IEEE 802.11 standard and so can be implemented easily by software. The simulation shows that EARF outperforms the existing ACK-based protocols such as ARF and ARF3-10 in most channel conditions.
