Apply Energy Simulation to Advanced Energy Audit to Evaluate a Library Building’s Retrofit

Energy simulation has been more widely applied to building energy audit practices in recent years in order to obtain more accurate savings estimates for retrofit measures. This paper presents a case study of a public library’s retrofit project by coupling an energy simulation with an advanced energy audit to improve the evaluation of energy efficiency measures. Three different methods for estimating occupant, lighting, and equipment loads were modelled and compared. In summary, the detailed data collection provided accuracy improvements of up to 12.5% over the two other methods tested. Associated energy retrofit savings compared to conventional energy audits showed anywhere from a 40% to 50% difference in estimated energy consumption demonstrating the inaccuracy of traditional audits.
