Nowadays, the use and storage of renewable energies on the one hand, coupled with demands to save energy on the other, mean that modern data centres and office buildings have to be designed and operated in a way that enables them to meet a number of totally new requirements. On top of this, the latest information and communication technologies are developing at breakneck speed, calling for a building's physical infrastructure to provide as much flexibility as possible. This paper illustrates how a 380 VDC micro grid was installed in an office building and the data centre of a German company. However, the analysis is not just restricted to factors relating to energy efficiency, it also looks at safety-related aspects of personal and plant protection.
