The mechanism of oleate attachment onto haematite has been investigated using differential scanningcalorimetry to determine the amount of collector adsorbed on the surface under varying solutionconcentrations at pH 7. Previous work has shown that oleate chemisorbs onto the haematite surface,and the orientation of the collector has been determined by correlating the area occupied by thecollector molecule with the mineral surface area. The results obtained indicate that the orientationof the adsorbed collector is dependent on its solution concentration and proceeds from horizontalto two-point and finally to vertical orientation with increased addition. Good correlation betweencollector adsorption and flotation recovery was demonstrated. The existence of oleate hemi-micelleswas also indicated.
