The central region of the DM halo of the Milky Way is a promising target for a search for a particle darkmatter (DM) self annihilation signal. Recent N-body simulations agree in the description of the radial DM density profileof a DM halo at projected distances from the halo center bigger than 45 pc within a factor of two. A search for a DMannihilation photon flux with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in the energy range between 300 GeV and100 TeV originating from distances to the halo center bigger than 45 pc (0.3) is presented. Assuming that the radialdependence of the DM density of the Milky Way can be described with the results of recent N-body simulations, upperlimits for the velocity weighted self annihilation cross section of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in theorder of 1025 cm 3 s 1 at WIMP masses of 1 TeV can be calculated. Prospects on an improvement of the sensitivity arediscussed.
