A design technique for lossless surface invisibility cloaks for free-space objects using surface waves is presented. For a time-harmonic plane wave of known incidence direction and polarization, the bounding surface of a cloaked region can be designed to transform and guide the illuminating plane wave around and along the surface as surface waves. The cloak design is characterized by an inhomogeneous tensor surface impedance that is pointwise lossless everywhere. The proposed designs are promising for realization as ultra-thin metasurface cloaks for electrically large objects in free space.
