Concert halls and theaters located in close proximity to rail transit or railroadtunnels require structural vibration and noise isolation to achieve low ambient noise levels within theperformance hall. Such buildings are generally of heavy poured-in-place concrete construction, whichallows for relatively easy accommodation of structural isolation to control the structure-borne noisefrom exterior sources, without significant changes to or variations from standard non-isolatedstructural configurations. Rose Theater is different in that it is located at the fifth level in therelatively lightweight and flexible steel frame high-rise structure of the Time Warner Center atColumbus Circle in New York City. Without structural isolation, the two rail transit subway linesadjacent to the site would cause intrusive structure-borne noise in the Theater. To provide formaximum flexibility in use of the performance space, the design goal for ambient noise from exteriorsources was the threshold of hearing. The special design configurations and structural additions usedto achieve effective structure-borne noise isolation and provide a low noise performance hall boxwithin a lightweight steel frame structure are presented. The design incorporates prefabricatedisolation bearing assemblies of a type which simplifies the construction compared to earlierconstruction techniques. The conclusion is that, with appropriate structural additions, it is possible toachieve a high degree of structure-borne noise isolation at a performance hall located within alightweight flexible building structure.
