An ever increasing urban population has substantially overburdened the cities of today. In particular, metropolitan city roads are being flooded with traffic each day and the numbers only seem to increase. While government bodies are busy in constructing numerous flyovers and underpasses to cope with the increasing traffic load, the current paper proposes an initiative to assist the government in better management of traffic through application of technology. As such, the paper proposes a unique traffic management system capitalizing over the Internet of Things. The system would work by virtue of a circuit board that is installed across the traffic signals and on the vehicles, allowing them to interact with traffic signals, change the light to red by detecting traffic overload on the opposite side of the road, respond to changing traffic lights and promptly identify vacant parking space for drivers. It is anticipated that actualization of this proposal would be of considerable assistance in better managing road traffic and in avoiding prolonged traffic jams.
