Very recently, the use of lightweight virtual reality applications for assisting e-commerce has become increaisngly popular. However, it is still unclear how and if these applications add value to an e-commerce solution. In this position paper we are going to look at the current state of art of virtual reality on the Internet. We further discuss to what extend 3d technologies have the potential to add value to e-commerce applications in product visualization, marketing and advertising.
