An analytical investigation of the shear strength of prestressed concrete (PC) beams with stirrups has been presented in this paper. The analytical work involved the development of a methodology for evaluating the shear strength of prestressed concrete beams subjected to shear force and bending moment. The developed methodology is based on the Softened Membrane Model for prestressed concrete (SMM-PC) and considers stress equilibrium, strain compatibility and constitutive relationships of the materials at various shear span-to depth ratios over the length of the cracked prestressed concrete member. The analytical prediction from the developed methodology match very well with the failure loads of tested shear critical PC beams with various amount of longitudinal and transverse steel and shear span-to-depth ratios. The results indicate that the proposed methodology is conservative and estimates the shear strength of shear critical PC beams with reasonable accuracy.
