Perspectives of experimentally based design strategies in steel engineering

Structural engineering mainly focuses safe and economically efficient constructions, which provide the socially accepted and defined level of safety. In relation to structural design, several methods are available for attainment. Eurocode follows the concept of increasing nominal load values and decreasing corresponding values of structural and material resistance for instance. With regard to the existing safety level, the knowledge of basic context and coherencies of the safety concept enables the derivation and development of particular coded application procedures. In doing so, economically efficient and safe design is possible. In this context, experimentally based design concepts are already of significant importance nowadays. Recent developments show the potential of an extension and development towards sensor and monitoring based design as well. Within the frame of this work, we will present and discuss calculation algorithms enabling the integration of experimental data and prospectively monitoring data into the design process of structures. The potential of experimentally based design will exemplarily be demonstrated and shown for particular steel components.
