Intrinsic functions are usually designed for high level languages, like 'C', to maximally exploit the special hardware features provided by DSP processor. In this paper, we discuss several issues in design and implementation of intrinsic functions that provides support to an ANSI 'C' compiler for Rockwell's in-house designed embedded DSP processor. Our experience shows that careful design and implementation of the intrinsic functions can significantly improve the application's performances, shorten the application developing time and reduce the complexity of compiler development.
